Sheikh Mohammed’s 7 Rules for Life in Dubai: According to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the identity of Dubai is shaped by the values of the people who live, work and contribute to the city.
In a recent letter addressed to the Dubai community, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, outlined seven principles that reflect his vision for life in the emirate.
The message forms part of his new book, The Letters, the second part of his Lessons from Life series. The book brings together 26 letters covering leadership, society, family, public service and lessons drawn from his long experience in building Dubai and serving the UAE.
Seven Principles for Life in Dubai
The first principle focuses on responsibility. Sheikh Mohammed describes responsibility as something that gives life meaning, highlighting the importance of people understanding their role and contributing positively to the community around them.
The second principle is respect. In a city where people from different nationalities and backgrounds live and work together, respect is presented as an essential part of social life. It recognises the value and dignity of every individual.
The third principle is excellence. Sheikh Mohammed places importance on striving for high standards and allowing one's work and achievements to speak for themselves. Excellence, in this context, is presented as a way of representing Dubai to the wider world.
The fourth principle is humility. Despite Dubai's international success and rapid development, the message places emphasis on remaining grounded. Humility is presented as a quality that strengthens rather than diminishes a person's standing.
The fifth principle is optimism. Sheikh Mohammed has frequently associated Dubai's development with an outlook focused on opportunity and the future. The principle encourages optimism as an approach to everyday life rather than simply a response to difficult circumstances.
The sixth principle is doing good. The message presents kindness and positive action as an ongoing way of life. Contributing to society is described as a path that can create value beyond individual success.
The seventh principle concerns loyalty and belonging. Sheikh Mohammed highlights the importance of appreciating a country that provides opportunities, security and a place to build a future. For Dubai's diverse community, the principle reflects the value of recognising and respecting the society in which people live.
Sheikh Mohammed’s 7 Rules for Life in Dubai: A Message Beyond Dubai’s Skyline
This message comes at a significant time for Sheikh Mohammed's new literary work. The Letters contains 26 letters written for different audiences, including family members, government teams, UAE citizens and readers around the world.
The Arabic edition of the book became available in UAE bookstores on October 1, 2026, while the English edition is scheduled for release on October 15.
For Dubai residents, the seven principles provide a concise look at the values Sheikh Mohammed associates with the emirate's social and civic identity. For international residents and visitors, they also offer insight into the ideas that have accompanied Dubai's transformation into a global city.
Rather than presenting Dubai only through its landmarks and economic achievements, the message places people and their conduct at the centre of the city's continuing story.
